The Dunbar Baldwin Hughes Theatre Company produces African and African-American plays, skits, monologues, poetry recitals, and creative dance presentations that aim to uplift the Johns Hopkins University student community through exposure to the traditions and experiences of African-Americans, while supplementing the experience, training, and exposure of the company’s actors. The Company was founded on the prolific principles of Paul Laurence Dunbar, Langston Hughes, and James Baldwin who were all pioneers in excavating the hardships of Negro life into literary compositions that could be enjoyed and examined by all. The feat of these pioneers is that they took a minority experience from historical and personal perspectives and translated it into stirring accounts that could be felt and understood by all; they were universalists. The Dunbar Baldwin Hughes Theatre Company aims to accomplish the same feat of these admired pioneers of African-American history. The Company aims to stir up the universal sensations of love, faith, spirituality, family values, and ethic tied to the black experience, which can be enjoyed by any audience, of any race, and of any creed.
